WATER SAFETY COURSE

In an effort to be pro-active about the recent spike in open water drownings, we are running Water Safety Awareness courses this August. Children will not only learn the life skills to assess hazards in open water and recognise and respond to difficult situations, they will also put their knowledge into practise, whilst enjoying our exhilarating water activities; including the Aqua Park, Paddleboarding, Kayaking and Open Water Swimming.

We want to encourage children and adults with no swimming ability to higher levels of pool swimming and the course will be structured according to each persons ability, for example whether they can take part in some of our water activities.

BOOK INTO OUR COURSE

The course is designed by a team of experienced professionals including those with experience and qualifications in Open Water Swim coaching, Royal Life Saving Society, British Canoeing, FREC responders, alongside our Director who has over 15 years of experience in running an open water swimming venue.

The course will cost £75 and will be run over a full day from 9:30am to 4:30pm and it will be fully packed with lots of information, activities and life changing skills on how to assess the dangers of water.  The day will include sessions on our water activities but those sessions will be approached with safety in mind – the ability to look for possible or probable dangers that they may face.  Activities to reinforce the skills we have learned with include: Aqua Park, Paddle boarding, Kayaking and Open Water Swimming.

WHAT WE WILL COVER

We will be doing lots of fun and engaging practical sessions to demonstrate and practise what to do if you or someone else falls into the water.

WE ARE RUNNING THIS COURSE ON THE 16th, 17th, 18th, 22nd 23rd AND 24th OF AUGUST

OPEN WATER SWIMMING SAFETY ADVICE

  • Never swim alone and without an adult
  • Plan ahead and tell someone where you are going and how long you expect to be there
  • Do not underestimate the dangers of open water
  • The water is colder than it looks
  • Beware of currents, undercurrents and tides
  • Do not swim at an unmanaged venue

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

400 people accidentally drown in the UK every year, which equates to one every 20 hours (National Water Safety Forum, 2016)

Around 85% of accidental drownings occur at open water sites and many of these drownings occur due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of open water safety (RLSS). Teaching a healthy respect for open water safety and being able to assess the dangers in these bodies of water can reduce the number of incidents that occur and increase the enjoyment of open water activities.
